Katharine Carruthers

Katharine Carruthers is the Director of the UCL IOE Confucius Institute, a national and international centre for the training of teachers of Mandarin Chinese. The UCL IOE CI supports a large network of schools across England which are teaching Chinese as part of the mainstream curriculum, and is a bilateral project with Peking University. Additionally, Katharine leads on the Mandarin Chinese PGCE at the Institute of Education.


Katharine graduated in Chinese from Durham University and has an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is an experienced teacher, teacher-trainer and examiner of Chinese, and is the series editor of the most widely-used textbooks for 11-16 year olds. She has travelled to China frequently over the last 30 years and has extensive experience of working with colleagues from China on bilateral projects.
